Reader Report

A reader report, also known as a partial manuscript evaluation, focuses on the first 10,000 to 15,000 words of your manuscript. It works best for new writers and manuscripts that have reoccurring structural or stylistic issues. In an editorial letter of 3–4 pages (around 1,000 words), I identify your opening’s greatest strengths and weaknesses, comment on any developmental and stylistic issues, and provide clear recommendations to help you find a revision strategy that works for you.

What does a reader report cover?

Much like a manuscript evaluation, a reader report advises on issues of plot, pacing, narrative style, voice, perspective, and characterization. It may also cover structural and stylistic issues specific to your book or genre, such as timeline, worldbuilding, and age-appropriateness (for Children’s, Middle Grade, or YA projects). Because a reader report only considers the first 10-15K of your manuscript, it is not as exhaustive as a full manuscript evaluation. However, it can identify broad issues that repeat over the course of your manuscript, allowing you to independently resolve problems beyond the first 10-15K.

Is your book ready for a reader report?

If you are new to writing or suspect that your manuscript has some major developmental or stylistic issues, a reader report lets you reap the benefits of a manuscript evaluation on a smaller scale and at a lower cost. It is a low-stakes investment in your work and a good introduction to professional editing.

How much does it cost?

I charge $200 to $300 CAD, depending on the length of your excerpt. If you decide to pursue a manuscript evaluation after receiving your reader report, the price of the report will be deducted from your evaluation fee, so long as the first 10-15K of your manuscript does not need further editorial consideration.

If you are interested in working with me, please complete an estimate request and email the first 3 chapters of your book to senicamaltese@gmail.com. If you are inquiring about a picture book, short story, novella, or essay, please send the entire manuscript. To avoid confusion, I ask that you supply your sample within 72 hours of completing your estimate request.
